Overview

Historian of Bulgarian art. Zakariev is principally known as a graphic artist. He graduated in 1919 from the Natsionalna Hudozhestvena Academia (the national academy of arts in Sofia). Between 1922 and 1924 studied in Leipzig at the State Academy of Graphic Art and Book Decoration. He returned to Sofia, rejoining the Academy, now as professor of graphic and decorative arts. He remained there the rest of his life, teaching illustration and producing prints. While engaged in these activities, he also wrote several books on Bulgarian artists and art of the medieval period.

Overview

Specialist in antique “kleinkunst” (smaller works of painting, ceramics and sculpture). Zahn wrote his dissertation in Berlin under Friedrich von Duhn. Zahn spent his career at the the Antiquities Section of the Berliner Museum, serving as Second Director 1918-1931 and First Director 1931-1935 of the section. He declined a call to Heidelberg University in 1920. He was made Honorarprofessor at Berlin University 1928-1936.

Overview

Director of the Weimar Museum, instigator of the famous “Holbein convention” of 1871 which set out to determine the authenticity of the two Burgomeister Meyer Madonna (Dresden and Darmstadt). To Zahn’s dismay, the autograph Holbein was the one in Darmstadt and not the Saxony one.
