Overview
Iconographic scholar scholar of Byzantine art. Ainalov studied at the Novorossiisky University in Odessa with N. P. Kondakov. In 1903, he became a professor at St. Petersburg University. He was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1914). Ainalov weighed in among the important Byzantinists Josef Rudolf Thomas Strzygowski and Charles Rufus Morey in contending that early Christian stylistic forms were drawn from western Asian sources and not principally Rome. In 1900 he published The Hellenistic Basis of Byzantine Art which for the first time revealed an aesthetic evolution of Byzantine art Great Soviet Encyclopedia).
His Byzantine Painting of the 14th Century appeared in 1917), between 1932 and 1933 he published (in German) History of Russian Monumental Art. His last work was Studies of Leonardo da Vinci (1939).
